Review and Giveaway of the NKJV Study Bible: Full Color Edition

I’ve been MIA for a few weeks, as I’ve been spending all my extra time loving on a sweet three-week-old baby girl (and doing all the washing that comes with her—it’s amazing how much laundry one tiny six-pound person can create). However, I was given the opportunity to review a Bible before Christmas (I rarely say no to reviewing and giving away a Bible!), and the time has come to share the review with all of you.

The Bible I was asked to check out is the Thomas Nelson NKJV Study Bible, a full-color, cranberry Leathersoft™ edition with what they call “easy to read Comfort Print®.” As I opened the package that arrived a few weeks ago, I was surprised to find such a beautiful Bible inside. I didn’t know it was going to look so nice with a pretty embossed design on the front and back. The full-color pictures and maps inside are also a nice touch, making it even more pleasing to the eye.

It’s nice for the Bible to look good, and of course God’s words inside any Bible are better than any book ever written, but in a review, I’m more interested in the “study” part of a study Bible. I have not been able to read all the notes written in this Bible—it would take me at least a year to do that—but I can say right away that this is not a study Bible in name only. The academic nature of this Bible is robust. It is chock-full of annotation notes—one quarter to three quarters up the pages. It is also brimming with helpful charts, graphs, articles, word studies, pictures, timelines, and maps. Cross-references grace every page, providing the ability for further related study.

Every book of the Bible begins with an introduction, supplying background information about the time period, author, and setting, and giving other pertinent facts, such as the structure, message, and outline of the book. As I wrote a Bible study called Jesus in Genesis, I especially loved to see a “Christ in the Scriptures” section for each book. I also love that cross-references with messianic prophecies are given a star so that they will stand out for the reader. The end of this Bible includes a thorough alphabetical subject index and a giant concordance—195 pages long.

My only caveat is that the NKJV is not my personal favorite translation. I’m partial to the NASB above all, but I prefer a NKJV over the KJV, as it has been put into modern English, and I believe the study notes will help with any differences in translation.
